Can hunchback really be changed? A spinal study from Taiwan.

Have you ever suddenly seen yourself hunched over in a mirror or in a photo taken by someone else?

Rounded shoulders, head tilted forward, upper back arched. You remind yourself to straighten up, hold the position for a moment, then slump back down. Prolonged sitting, looking at your phone, staring at your computer—modern life is practically designed to create hunchbacks.

Most people think that hunchback is just how it is, and at most they can remind themselves to straighten up a bit, but it's hard to really change it.

However, a study from Taiwan has rigorously proven one thing: hunchback can be corrected. And the method used is gentle peristalsis.

What did this study do?

Master's thesis by Lin Hung-Yan, Department of Physical Therapy and Assistive Technology, National Yang-Ming University (now National Chiao Tung University), under the supervision of Dr. Tzu-Chuan Wang, completed in 2015.

This is a very rigorously designed clinical study—prospective, randomized, with a control group, and followed up for two months.

The study recruited 60 young adults with kyphosis (aged 18 to 40, with a thoracic kyphosis angle greater than 40 degrees) and randomly divided them into two groups: one group underwent 12 weeks of GYROKINESIS training twice a week, and the other group was a control group.

Then, at week 6, week 12, and two months after the end of the study, a series of objective indicators were measured, including thoracic kyphosis angle, spinal mobility, head tilt angle, flexibility, trunk muscle endurance, etc.

It is worth mentioning that the researchers themselves are physical therapists—this gives the study a clinical-level rigor in its measurements of posture and spine.

The following data all come from this paper.

Result 1: The angle of hunchback was indeed reduced.

This is the most crucial and powerful finding of this study.

After 12 weeks of Chanrou training, the thoracic kyphosis angle (i.e. the degree of hunchback) in the intervention group was significantly reduced—and this was measured in four different postures, all of which showed significant improvement (p<0.001).

The specific figures are astonishing:

The hunchback angle in a normal standing posture decreased from 44.3 degrees to 33.8 degrees. In a normal sitting posture, it decreased from 41.7 degrees to 34.4 degrees. Even when consciously adjusting one's standing and sitting posture (keeping it straight), the hunchback angle also decreased significantly.

A reduction of more than 10 degrees in the angle of hunchback when standing is not a subjective improvement, but an objectively measured and real change in posture.

The control group, however, did not show this change.

Result 2: Overall improvement in spinal mobility.

Hunchback is often not just a matter of "lazy posture," but rather a loss of the spine's proper mobility—especially the thoracic spine, which gradually loses its ability to arch backward and rotate due to being fixed in a forward-bent position for a long time.

This study measured spinal mobility, and the results were equally significant:

The sagittal (anteroposterior) thoracic vertebral mobility increased from 66.1 degrees to 80.6 degrees. The frontal (lateral bending) vertebral mobility increased from 82.2 degrees to 90.1 degrees.

In other words, Chanrou doesn't just make people "look more upright," but truly restores the spine's ability to flow in multiple directions.

This is especially important. Because if you're just relying on willpower to stay upright, and the spine's natural mobility hasn't changed, that uprightness is just a forced effort and can't last long. But when the spine's mobility truly improves, good posture has a real structural foundation.

Result 3: Even forward head posture, flexibility, and muscle endurance improved.

This study measures a wide range of indicators, and almost every one shows significant progress.

The forward head tilt angle decreased from 38.6 degrees to 36 degrees—the "turtle neck" typical of modern people has been improved.

Forward bend flexibility increased from 1.9 cm to 6.13 cm—an improvement of more than 4 cm.

Chest mobility increased from 5.4 cm to 6.7 cm—the chest cavity's ability to expand during breathing improved.

Trunk flexor endurance increased from 111.3 seconds to 182.7 seconds. Extensor endurance increased from 103.8 seconds to 148.9 seconds. Plank time improved from 70.5 seconds to 104 seconds.

Posture, range of motion, flexibility, core endurance—Chanrou brings about changes in so many aspects simultaneously.

Result 4: The effect was still present two months later.

This is another valuable finding of this study.

The problem with many sports interventions is that they are effective while you are training, but you revert to your original form as soon as you stop.

However, this study followed up for two months and found that most of the therapeutic effects were maintained even after two months of stopping training.

This shows that the changes brought about by Chanrou are not temporary superficial effects, but a real reshaping of body structure and movement patterns—the mobility of the spine has returned, the core support has been established, and good posture has become the new preset, rather than a state that needs to be maintained with constant effort.

Why can Chanrou change a hunchback?

Once you understand the principles behind Chanrou, these results are not surprising at all.

The core problem of hunchback is that the thoracic spine is fixed in a forward-bending position for a long time, losing the ability to bend backward and rotate. At the same time, the extensor muscles of the upper back become weak and the muscles in the chest become tight.

Chanrou's movement logic perfectly addresses these issues.

Its seven-directional spinal movement, especially the backward extension and rotation, directly awakens the long-dormant movements of the thoracic spine. Its opposing extensions allow the spine to continuously lengthen during movement, counteracting the compression caused by gravity. Its rhythmic breathing drives the expansion of the ribcage, which explains why even ribcage mobility is improved. Furthermore, its deep core training establishes the internal support needed to maintain good posture—corresponding to a significant improvement in trunk muscle endurance.

Chanrou doesn't just "remind you to straighten up," but rather rebuilds the structural foundation of good posture from multiple levels, including spinal mobility, chest expansion, and core support.

The significance of this study

This is the first study to explore the effectiveness of Gyrokinesi on kyphosis and spinal mobility.

Using a rigorous randomized controlled design and clinically graded objective measurements, it has been demonstrated that the improvement of kyphosis by Chanrou is not a subjective feeling, but a measurable, statistically significant, and sustainable real change.

For every modern person who spends long hours sitting, looking at their phone, staring at a computer, and feeling increasingly hunched over, this study provides a very practical answer:

Being hunchbacked is not a fate you have to accept.

With the right training, the spine can regain its mobility, and the body can relearn to stand upright—not by force, but by a genuine change from the depths of its structure.

Your spine is more malleable than you think.

It just needs to be reawakened in the right way.
