What is the so-called "energy" in GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Movement?

When people first hear Teacher GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® say "send the energy upward" or "let the energy flow out from the center of the seed," many people's first reaction is:

What does this mean?

The word "energy" sounds a bit abstract in the context of sports. It's not as concrete as "tightening your abs" or "bending your knees"—you can't see it in a mirror, and you can't measure it with force.

But the energy that GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® talks about is not metaphysics. It has a very concrete physical basis.

Energy is not an abstract concept.

In GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®'s system, "energy" refers to the dynamic tension within the body—a state that allows movement to grow from within rather than being propelled by external forces.

The simplest way to understand this is to imagine a tree.

The reason why a tree trunk can stand upright is not because it is supported by something, but because the tree itself has a force that grows upward from the roots—water is transported upward through the vascular bundles, and the turgor pressure of the cells keeps the tissues under tension. The whole tree stands because of this internal force.

The energy within GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® is this kind of power that grows from within. It is not brute force, nor is it tension, but a kind of directional and intentional inner tension.

Energy is "qi"—a modern interpretation of an ancient concept.

Juliu Horvath, the founder of GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®, was deeply influenced by Tai Chi, yoga, dance, and swimming in developing this system. The core concept of "Qi" in Tai Chi is the most direct cultural root of the "energy" that GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® speaks of.

In the traditions of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Tai Chi, "Qi" is the life force flowing within the body—it's not a mystical spiritual concept, but rather a term describing the internal flow of energy within the body. In modern terms:

Qi = Energy = Blood circulation and the flow of body fluids.

When Qi flows smoothly and blood circulation is good, tissues receive sufficient oxygen and nutrients, and the body feels light and energetic. When Qi stagnates and circulation is obstructed, tissues lack nourishment, and the body feels heavy, sore, and tired.

The gentle, undulating movements, the spiraling rotations, and the rhythmic breathing—these designs are essentially all about promoting the flow of fluids within the body, allowing "qi" to circulate smoothly throughout the body. This is not a metaphor, but a design supported by specific physiological mechanisms: breathing drives the diaphragm to pump, the waves of the spine promote the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid, and the rhythm of the pelvis stimulates the flow of lymph and blood.

So when a teacher says "let the energy flow," it means: let your body truly flow.

Where does energy come from? Three specific sources.

First source: Breathing

Breathing is GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®'s most basic source of energy.

With each inhalation, the diaphragm descends, the abdominal cavity expands, and the entire torso is filled from the inside; with each exhalation, the diaphragm rises, the abdominal cavity contracts, and energy is directed in a specific direction. This is not just exchanging air, but using breathing to create and guide pressure changes within the body.

When breathing and movement are perfectly synchronized, the body will have a feeling of being "expanded from the inside"—this is the energy brought by breathing.

Second source: Seed Center

GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® refers to the inner center line deep in the pelvis as the "Seed Center"—which is also known as the Dantian in Eastern tradition. It is located at the very center of the pelvis and is the origin of body movements.

In the traditions of Traditional Chinese Medicine and martial arts, the dantian is regarded as the center for storing and activating human energy. The movements of Tai Chi, Qigong, and martial arts all emphasize "sinking the qi to the dantian"—allowing energy to settle in this deep core and then be activated outward from there. This concept almost perfectly matches GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®'s Seed Center: an internal support point located deep in the pelvis from which all movements originate.

When the Seed Center is activated, the pelvic floor muscles, deep abdominal muscles, and iliopsoas muscles form a complete support system—the body has a foundation from its deepest core. This foundation is the starting point of energy.

All graceful movements must originate from the Seed Center. It's not about the hands or shoulders moving first, but about feeling that tiny initiation deep within the pelvis, and then letting the movement grow from there.

The third source: Intention

GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®li has a core principle: intention is the force that drives the body's movement.

When you have a clear intention—"fingers reaching into the distance," "spine flowing like waves," "head growing towards the sky"—the brain sends out more precise neural signals, and the quality of your body's movements changes accordingly.

Neuroscience tells us that clear motor intention triggers a more complete neuromuscular response—more muscle fibers are involved, the movement is more efficient, and the fascial chains are activated more fully. This neuromuscular activation driven by intention is the energy brought about by intention.

The flow of energy: Why is direction important?

Chan Rou Li often says that "energy flows upward" or "energy extends to the limbs." These statements have their own specific bodily logic.

Upward energy: Axial extension of the spine

"Upward energy" specifically refers to the axial extension of the spine—increasing the space between each vertebra, transforming the spine from a compressed state to an extended state. This requires the simultaneous occurrence of deep core support and the intentional extension of the crown of the head.

When this "upward energy" truly flows, you will feel yourself "growing taller"—not because your posture has been corrected, but because your spine has actually been lengthened internally.

Outward energy: the extension of limbs

"Extending energy to the fingers" specifically means extending the intention of the movement beyond the fingertips, reaching further into the distance. When the intention stops at the wrist, the muscles contract near the wrist; when the intention extends further, the fascial chain of the entire arm is lengthened, making the movement smoother and more spatial.

Bidirectional energy: extending in opposite directions

The most important energy principle of GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® is lengthening through opposition—the body extends simultaneously in two opposite directions. The top of the head goes up, the tailbone goes down; the arms go forward, the back goes backward.

This two-way energy creates stability in movement—not through muscle exertion, but through the balance of tension at both ends. This is the core of the quality of GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®'s movements.

What is the difference between energy and "effort"?

This is the most confusing part for many people when they first come into contact with GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®.

"Exertion" is the contraction of muscles—local, exhausting, and often accompanied by tension. "Energy flow" is the activation of the body's tension system—holistic, efficient, and often accompanied by a feeling of lightness.

A very direct way to experience it: raise your arms and brace yourself. Can you feel the tension in your shoulders?

Now, imagine your fingers extending to the ceiling, allowing energy to flow from the Seed Center to your fingertips. The tension in your shoulders will change, and your arms will feel longer and lighter.

This is the difference between force and energy flow. Even something as simple as raising your hand can involve completely different ways of using your body.

Why do you feel "energized" after practicing for a long time?

Many people who practice GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® for a period of time will begin to feel particularly clear-headed and energetic after class—unlike the fatigue after other sports, it's a feeling of being recharged.

There are several specific reasons for this: the vagus nerve is regularly stimulated, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, and the body enters a repair and recharging mode; the bio-energy pump mechanism promotes fluid circulation throughout the body, and tissues regain nutrients and oxygen; the activation of the deep core allows the body to no longer rely on surface muscles for compensation, making movements more effortless and reducing overall energy consumption.

The energy within GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® is not metaphysics, but rather the most refined layer of bodily function.

The energy in GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® is not an abstract or mysterious concept, but a real feeling that comes from the improvement of the body's overall function. When breathing is smoother, circulation is more fluid, the nervous system is more balanced, and the body's connections are more complete, people will naturally feel more energetic and closer to the body's natural state.

This is why many people feel that not only their bodies become more flexible, but also their minds and emotions become more stable after practicing GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®. When the body begins to flow, energy naturally begins to flow as well—and this change from the inside out is the most fascinating aspect of GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®.
